The Pipes is an installation which uses salvaged and recycled ceramic drainage pipes to create dynamic urban seating and planting. The pipes serve as self-irrigating, low-maintenance planters for wild flowers and important urban pollinator plants. The installation makes use of the principle of evaporative cooling to also reduce the ambient temperature surrounding the installation during the hot months of the summer.
The installation serves as both a inviting public space as well as an investigation of the use and re-use of materials within a circular building economy, using non-toxic, inexpensive, recycled materials designed with the entire life cycle in mind from the outset. Instead of a single location, the installation is designed to be distributed across different pockets of public space to increase it's contribution to urban ecological corridors while being easily identifyable with a bold unified material language.
