2020

Masters Module Exploring Urban Technology

City as Technology was a studio on the Prototyping Future Cities international Masters Program at Shukhov Lab, the multidisciplinary research, project and educational lab at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow.

The studio focused on the recent history of city-scale platforms and 'smart' technologies, asking how the investigation or critique of such propositions if the process of urbanisation and 'the city' is itself understood as a form a technology. It covered human-computer-interfaces, city control centers, data structures and API's and investigated thed uncertain shift that is underway as more stable categories of citizen, consumer or worker are replaced with the ill-defined position of 'user'.

The studio also featured technical workshops covering: Figma, React, GraphQL, SparkAR, Blender, HTML and CSS.

Students were asked to research and propose alternatives models for using networked technology in an urban context.
