Reconfiguring Russia’s Urban Networks - Workshop at Strelka Institute

Workshop Held at The Strelka Institute as Part of The New Normal.

Workshop Brief

There are 1114 Russian cities.
75% of Russia’s population live in cities.
59% of these cities were built within the last 100 years

What will the urban networks of the future look like? Will they be definined by ‘autarky’, the desire to create closed economic indepen- dence or will new network structures emerge?

The researchers were given access to up-to-date economic, demographic and geographic data, and spoke to various experts in these fields. The resulting design explorations were grounded in the territorial mechanisms and social reality of contemporary Russia whilst encouraging speculative considerations of the infrastructures and configurations of Russia 2049.
