<html><body><h2>As energy becomes increasingly generated from renewable sources, fluctuations of weather, solar radiation and wind becomes of infrastructural importance. Could we visualise the ways they change across minutes, hours, days and decade at the same time?</h2>



<p>The Erractic calendar is an interactive interface prototype developed as part of the <a href="http://residency2020.heat-island.com" data-type="URL" data-id="http://residency2020.heat-island.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Heat Island Research Residency 2020</a> to explore this question, produced in close collaboration with Zoe Panayi.</p>



<p>Currently, the intermittency of a weather-based renewable energy supply is one the biggest challenges of a green energy transition. This is a beta version of a tool to explore weather-dependent energy data with respect to cyclical axis of time.</p>



<p>The calendar maps the shape of UK energy supply and demand across the day (central circle), year (middle circle) and century (outer circle). Its shows how behaviour patterns shape energy demand across time, and the times when there is a gap between current energy demand and a renewable energy supply. The gaps suggest a set of technological and behavioural shifts which would align with a renewable energy supply and move us towards a renewable grid.</p>



<p>The more closely we are able to make our energy demands match a weather-dependent energy supply (expressed here by the solar irradiance and wind speed), the more renewable energy sources will become a viable alternative to fossil fuels. This is called demand response and alongside storage and interconnection is one of the key tools for making a renewable grid possible.</p>

<p>The title comes from a description of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairy_ball_theorem">Hairy Ball Theorem</a> which describes the impossibility of perfectly combing hairs on a sphere.</p>

<p>The White Review is an arts and literature quarterly magazine, with triannual print and monthly online editions. The magazine launched in February 2011 to provide &acirc;&#128;&#152;a space for a new generation to express itself unconstrained by form, subject or genre&acirc;&#128;&#153;, and publishes fiction, essays, interviews with writers and artists, poetry, and series of artworks.</p>



<p>Studio Burman provided a full-stack design and redevelopment of The White Review&rsquo;s online presence, seeking to provide an fully responsive and engaging online space as intimate and elegant as their sumptuous print editions whilst reorganising their editorial workflow.</p>

<html><body><p>Linguine is an operating system for public space, enabling the coordination and control of a variety of urban infrastructures and technologies such as lighting, cameras, projectors and fountains. It was originally developed for Another Life, one of Europe&acirc;&#128;&#153;s largest permanent interactive public artworks in Bradford, England.</p>



<p>The early version of the software, a custom C++ interaction engine that took data from real sensors and devices, creating a framework of relationships and feedback loops that could be modified through a simple interface to orchestrate the conditions of the public space. This software included a custom OpenGL 3D visualisation, demonstrating the output of the system and a port of OpenSteer, a multi-agent programming library to simulate movements of the public within the space.</p>

<p><br>Porthole was an experimental application that extended the universe of Pachube data into the context of AR &acirc;&#128;&#147; a &lsquo;porthole&rsquo; into Pachube&rsquo;s data environments. </p>



<p>The application relies on the marker based ARToolkitPlus to orient 3D graphics around markers which are generated on the&nbsp;Porthole&nbsp;web page, printed and placed at points of interest. Inside each of these markers is a QR 2D bar code which &ndash; once the marker is discovered by the software &acirc;&#128;&#147; is decoded2&nbsp;to enumerate the ID of the environment being queried.</p>



<p>Porthole&nbsp;automatically pulls both real-time and historical data relating to that environment from Pachube3. Users can print markers that relate to the data feeds they have registered or those of others they are generally interested in a tracking.</p>



<p>Thus&nbsp;the marker itself&nbsp;provides an interface to quickly correlate a real-world location with real-time values for temperature, or carbon-footprint, or any of the myriad of variables that can be tracked with Pachube generate at that location. The current version of the application allows users to see, at a glance, which types of data are available, the current values and standard deviations on closer interaction view graphs of historic data values.</p>



<p>This approach has advantages for creating networked objects connected to the internet, as part of the general category known as the &lsquo;internet of things&rsquo;. The interpretation and processing of sensor and environment data, alongside meta-data and historical comparison can be separated from the device. Rich data from objects or environments can then have local relevance despite being systematically separate from the device. Using 3D graphics orientated on top of the marker, it also becomes possible to read these various values as though one might read a thermometer or to quickly maintain a large cluster of networked objects &acirc;&#128;&#147; without needing a hardware display system built into the device.</p>

Application For Viewing Real Time Sensor Data in Augmented Reality

<p>Pachube (public launch 2008, acquired by LogMeIn Inc for $15m in 2011 and rebranded as &acirc;&#128;&#152;Xively&acirc;&#128;&#153;) was one of the world&acirc;&#128;&#153;s first generalised data platforms and communities for the Internet of Things (IoT), that at its height handled millions of datapoints per day from thousands of individuals, organisations &amp; companies around the world. It&acirc;&#128;&#153;s global community used the service to store, manage, discover and share open data from all sorts of networked devices and sensors, including electricity meters, weather stations, building management systems, air quality monitors, biosensors, geiger counters and even water-level sensors in sewers.</p>
<p>After a brief period interning soon after Pachube was founded in 2008, I became it&acirc;&#128;&#153;s third employee, remaining with the start-up through it&acirc;&#128;&#153;s rapid expansion until it&acirc;&#128;&#153;s acquisition in 2011.</p>
<p>During this time I had a broad range of responsibilities, from presenting at conferences, leading numerous workshop as well as expanding the scope of the service across various network technologies. This included designing and developing various mobile applications including the official Pachube iPhone app, and &acirc;&#128;&#152;Porthole&acirc;&#128;&#153; an augmented reality data visualisation app which led to my participation in the first W3C Web Standard Committee meeting on AR in 2010. I also wrote Pachube plug-ins for external software platforms including Second Life and SketchUp.<br />
For my work on Pachube 2010 I was nominated alongside Usman Haque and Sam Mulube for a Design Museum &ndash; &acirc;&#128;&#152;Design of The Year Award&acirc;&#128;&#153; in the Interactive Category.</p>
